Recycling And Reducing Construction Waste Eco Friendly Wall Removal Tips
Wall removal generates a surprising amount of material. Drywall, lumber, insulation, sometimes old lath-and-plaster if you're working in a vintage home โ it adds up fast. Most of it ends up in a dumpster and then a landfill. It doesn't have to.
We're a Texas company, and we're practical people. We're not going to lecture you about carbon footprints. But we do think smart waste management is just good business, and some of these approaches can actually save you money.
Drywall โ More Recyclable Than You Think
Gypsum โ the material inside drywall โ is highly recyclable. Clean drywall (no mold, no contamination) can be ground up and used as a soil amendment or as raw material in new drywall manufacturing. Many Texas metros now have gypsum recycling facilities. The catch: the drywall needs to be separated from other debris. If you're demoing a wall, pull the drywall clean and keep it separate from the wood waste.
Lumber โ Salvage What You Can
Old-growth Douglas fir and heart pine from pre-1960s homes are genuinely valuable. The wood that went into houses 60 or 70 years ago is denser and harder than most modern lumber โ craftsmen and furniture makers actively seek it. Before you throw those 2x4s in the dumpster, look at what you've got. If the wood is straight and clean, it has a second life somewhere.
Habitat for Humanity ReStores accept salvaged lumber and building materials. So do a number of specialty lumber dealers in the DFW and Houston areas. You're not going to get rich off it, but you might offset some project costs and keep good material out of a landfill.
Plaster and Masonry
Older Texas homes โ especially pre-1960s construction โ often have plaster walls instead of drywall. Plaster is heavier and messier to remove, and it doesn't have as many recycling outlets. But crushed plaster and masonry debris can often be used as fill material or taken to concrete recyclers. Check with your local waste hauler.
Our Approach
We sort debris on the job site when it makes sense. We're not perfect, and we're not going to pretend the construction waste problem has an easy solution. But over 12,000 walls removed across Texas since 2015, we've gotten a lot of practice at efficient, clean demo that minimizes what goes to the landfill.
If sustainability is important to you on your project, tell us. We'll talk through what's realistic and what the options are in your specific area โ DFW, Houston, or Austin. We're straight with people about what we can and can't do.
