Joist Hanger By Load Bearing Wall Pros
Joist hangers don't get a lot of attention in conversations about load bearing wall removal, but they're one of those details that matters more than most people realize. When we're installing a new beam where a load bearing wall used to be, how those joists connect to the new beam is a structural concern โ not just a carpentry one.
What Is a Joist Hanger?
A joist hanger is a metal connector โ typically galvanized steel โ that wraps around a joist and fastens it to a beam or ledger board. Instead of the joist sitting on top of a wall plate, it hangs from the side of the beam using the hanger. This is how you get joists to connect flush to the top of a beam rather than resting on top of it, which is critical when you need to maintain a consistent floor or ceiling height.
They look simple. But they're engineered products with specific load ratings, specific nailing requirements, and specific installation details that matter for code compliance.
Why Joist Hangers Matter in Wall Removal Projects
Here's the scenario: you've got a load bearing wall running through the middle of your first floor. Floor joists on each side of the wall are currently sitting on the wall's top plate. When we remove the wall and install a beam, those same joists now need to connect to the new beam instead of resting on the wall.
Depending on the framing situation, we may need to install joist hangers to make that connection properly. This is especially true when the beam is being installed flush with the ceiling โ meaning the top of the beam is at the same level as the bottom of the floor above. The joists can't just sit on top of the beam in that case; they need to hang from it.
Get this wrong and you've got joists that aren't properly supported. Over time, that shows up as bouncy floors, cracked drywall, or worse.
Correct Installation Is Non-Negotiable
Joist hangers have specific nailing requirements โ the right number of nails, the right nail size, driven into the right holes. Under-nailed hangers don't achieve their rated load capacity. It sounds like a minor detail, but it's the kind of thing that building inspectors check and that matters for the long-term performance of the structure.
Our crew knows this. We've installed thousands of joist hangers across 12,000+ wall removal projects in Texas. We're not guessing at the nailing pattern. We follow manufacturer specs and IRC requirements because that's what produces a connection that actually performs.
The Bigger Picture
Joist hangers are one of dozens of details that go into a properly executed load bearing wall removal. The beam, the posts, the temporary support system, the connections โ every piece has to be right. That's why this work requires experience and engineering oversight, not a YouTube tutorial and a rented beam jack.
